Speak for the Child Project Survey
Overview
This survey was developed by the Academy for Educational
Development/Ready to Learn Center. The purpose of the survey is to
identify young (age 5 and under) orphans and other vulnerable children in AIDS-affected rural communities of western Kenya. The respondents have generally been between the ages of 20 and 75 years and have low literacy skills. The survey is used to identify
orphans and other vulnerable children for programmatic purposes.
Methodology/validity
The survey was conducted by trained community volunteers from the particular village being surveyed (a village elder usually accompanied the volunteer). Volunteers interviewed the primary caregiver in the household. The survey went through several iterations, in order to simplify the format and enable the community to analyze some of the questions themselves. Each iteration has been pre-tested and the information on young
orphans and other vulnerable children has been validated by a follow-up visit by field staff. Speak for the Child staff provided survey training and supervision. This survey is currently available in English.
