In Memoriam: The Population Council mourns the
death of William T. Golden, Council trustee from 1979 to 1989. (offsite

Council trustee Torsten N. Wiesel has been awarded the
National Medal of Science. The medal was created by the US
Congress for "outstanding contributions" to science. Wiesel, who shared
the 1981 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, has been on the
Council's board since 1999.
Former Council trustee Mechai Viravaidya was
awarded the 2007 Gates Award for Global Health. Viravaidya is
founder and chairman of the Population and Community Development
Association of Thailand, which was recognized for pioneering work in
family planning and HIV/AIDS prevention. |
