The Population Council is working in Zimbabwe to improve the quality of care of family planning services and to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS.

The Council has documented the research and educational activities of many groups that led to the decision by the Zimbabwe government to make the female condom—known there as the Care contraceptive sheath—available. Current research supported by the Council provides important information on use patterns, negotiation, continuation, and method substitution.

The Population Council is conducting research on community-based education and information strategies to help men and women improve their health-seeking behavior related to sexually transmitted infections, including HIV. The Council’s partner in this effort is the Zimbabwe National Family Planning Council. The study will contribute to improving overall understanding about how community-based programs can help reduce STI transmission while increasing family planning services.
