The Population Council has
conducted a range of studies to increase
access to and improve the quality of reproductive health care in the
Dominican Republic.
Development of HIV/STI Prevention Interventions
Among Clients and
Sexual Partners of Female Sex Workers
The primary goal of this Hewlett Foundation-supported project was to inform the development of HIV/STI
prevention strategies aimed at both paying and non-paying male partners of
female sex workers. The Council collaborated with the Centro de
Orientación e Investigación Integral and the Centro de Promoción y
Solidaridad Humana in Puerto Plata on this project. This study built on
a project of the Council's Horizons Program in which researchers successfully increased condom use and lowered rates
of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among female sex workers.
The most recent study
explored the social and sexual networks of
the male clients and the impact of these networks on HIV/STI prevention.
Council researchers conducted focus groups and in-depth interviews in
Santo Domingo and Puerto Plata, and analyzed secondary data from an
existing database of sex worker clients in Santo Domingo. Council staff
members also evaluated the strengths and weaknesses of potential
HIV/STI-prevention intervention strategies. Additionally, the study
assessed the possibilities for increasing the access to and the utilization
of public STI clinics among male partners of female sex workers.
