AMERICAS The Population Council, a global organization, has its headquarters in New York City, near the United Nations. About half of the Council's staff is based in the United States, and many interregional projects are managed by staff members in either New York or Washington, DC. The Population Council's biomedical laboratories are also located in New York City, on the campus of Rockefeller University. The Council's Center for Biomedical Research is one of the world's leading laboratories for the development of contraceptives and other health products. The design of these products is based in part on the findings from basic research in reproductive biology and immunology that is also conducted at the center. Clinical trials conducted in the United States have contributed to the development of female and male contraceptives and of a candidate vaginal microbicide, a gel that may prevent HIV infection. The Population Council manages five major programs from the United States. Two are operations research programs centered in Washington DC—Frontiers in Reproductive Health and the Horizons Program, which conducts operations research on HIV/AIDS/STI prevention, care, and support around the world. New York-based programs include one dedicated to microbicides research, one that explores issues concerning girls' and women's social and economic roles (the Gender, Family, and Development Program), and one focusing on the study of reproductive health issues (the Ebert Program). Social research (and some biomedical research) is conducted at the invitation of, and in collaboration with, governments and/or local service providers in developing-world countries. The majority of the Council's publications in English, as well as some in Spanish and French, are edited and printed in the United States, including books, working papers, booklet series, newsletters, and two journals. The Council provides fellowships to those who wish to pursue advanced study in the physiology and biochemistry of reproduction, providing training in its biomedical laboratories. It also offers a few residential postdoctoral fellowships with advanced training and research in population studies under the mentorship of a member of its social science research staff in New York.
