Thank you for considering a gift to the Population Council after watching NOW's "Child Brides: Stolen Lives"  on PBS.

The Population Council’s mission is to improve the well-being and reproductive health of current and future generations and to help achieve a humane, equitable, and sustainable balance between people and resources.

The Council’s program of work with adolescent girls is focused on the poorest communities in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Issues these communities face are:

  • High levels of child marriage;
  • An HIV epidemic increasingly selective of young women; and
  • Persistently high levels of early school dropout, often linked to gender-based violence in communities and in schools.

The Council has projects in Bangladesh, Burkina Faso, Egypt, Ethiopia, Guatemala, India, Kenya, Malawi, and South Africa. Work is now beginning in Sudan and Yemen.

Your contribution can help advance the Council’s efforts to protect girls at risk of child marriage, HIV infection, early school dropout, and gender-based violence, as well as partnerships with local organizations in these countries that are making a difference in girls’ lives.

The Population Council is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization. Your gift is tax deductible in the United States in accordance with Internal Revenue Service regulations.

You can support the Council's program of work with adolescent girls by making a contribution.

The Population Council devotes 85 percent of its budget to program services, making the best use of your charitable contributions. The Council has been awarded the Independent Charities of America “Best in America” Seal of Excellence. This distinction is given to organizations that have, upon rigorous independent review, been able to certify, document, and demonstrate on an annual basis that they meet the highest standards of public accountability, program effectiveness, and cost effectiveness. These standards include those required by the US Government for inclusion in the Combined Federal Campaign. Of the 1,000,000 charities operating in the United States today, fewer than 50,000, or 5 percent, meet or exceed these standards, and, of those, fewer than 2,000 have been awarded this seal.
