The Population Council has worked in Cambodia since 1999. Much of the early work fell under the aegis of the Council's recently concluded Horizons program, which conducted HIV/AIDS-related operations research (OR). The focus subsequently broadened to include studies on reproductive health and population aging.

Highlights of past and present work

  • Conducted a situation analysis of the quality of services provided for women with reproductive tract infections. Council staff worked with USAID, the University Research Company, and the Reproductive Health Association of Cambodia to document the quality of care and identify interventions that could be piloted within an operations research framework.
  • Reviewed data from Cambodia as part of a global study of the living arrangements of older adults.
  • Conducted the first systematic representative survey of the situation of older persons in Cambodia with special attention given to assessing both the longer-term impacts of conflict and violence and the effects of the illness and death of adult children on the well-being of older adults.
