Overview

In China, previous Population Council activities have focused on reproductive tract infections (RTIs), improving the quality of care in reproductive health services, and population aging.

The Council currently supports 12 fellows from China, studying either the physiology of male reproduction or reproductive endocrinology, in New York City.

Highlights of past work

  • Reviewed and evaluated RTI educational materials designed for community members in Yunnan province; evaluated RTI research proposals; and conducted an advanced RTI training workshop at Kunming Medical College for participants from across China.
  • Provided technical assistance to Kunming Medical College on a strategic assessment of the quality of reproductive health services in Yunnan province.
  • Collaborated with the State Family Planning Commission to phase in an alternative approach to its family planning program so that it would provide services better suited to its clients' needs.
  • Examined health outcomes and determinants and their links to socioeconomic status and living arrangements.
  • Assessed the availability and use of a minimum package of HIV/AIDS prevention services for most-at-risk populations and examined how data were collected on the numbers of clients served in order to improve coverage estimates.
