Overview
The Population Council has been working in Jordan since 2000. The focus of research and programs has been on reproductive health, gender, and employment. Current work is focused on better understanding the labor market for women and youth in the Middle East.
Council staff members in Cairo and New York have provided assistance to the UNICEF office in Amman and Jordan's Department of Statistics in producing a national survey of youth in Jordan.
Highlights of past and present work
- Update the state of knowledge on labor market functioning and outcomes in general and the quality of jobs in particular, primarily for women and youth in Egypt, to be scaled up in Jordan and Morocco.
- Conducted demographic analysis of the gender, education level, and familial situation of youth aged 10–14 in order to better understand the needs of adolescents.
