Overview

The Population Council has worked in Morocco since 1999 with a research focus on fertility and family planning methods. The Council has studied fertility rates and birth spacing in Morocco to uncover important features that allow for better fertility control. Current work is focused on better understanding the labor market for women and youth in the Middle East.

Highlights of past and present work

  • Update the state of knowledge on labor market functioning and outcomes in general and the quality of jobs in particular, primarily for women and youth in Egypt, to be scaled up in Jordan and Morocco.
  • Conducted an analysis of fertility and birth spacing to determine that women's age at first birth, spacing births, and limiting births affect the country’s overall fertility rate.
  • Quantified the magnitude of impact that family planning programming has on actual contraceptive use and intended use.
