Overview

Population Council activities in Nicaragua have focused on researching contraceptive options and other reproductive health care services, particularly in Ministry of Health programs. Currently the Council has no research and programs in Nicaragua.

Highlights of past work

  • Assessed the use of family planning in postpartum, postabortion, and prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV services in Nicaragua.
  • Documented conditional cash transfer programs (CCTs) to identify possible opportunities to improve links between CCTs and reproductive health programs and to assess potential roles for operations research within these programs.
  • Identified provider training needs, as well as methods for follow-up, supervision, and evaluation, as part of an effort to introduce injectables as a family planning method for women.
  • Conducted training and dissemination workshops on emergency contraception for health care providers in both the private and public sectors.
