Population Council Research that makes a difference

Overview

The Population Council began research activities in Peru in 1984. Past Council activities in Peru focused on strengthening the public and private health sectors. Currently there are no active projects in the country.

Highlights of past work

  • Documented conditional cash transfer programs (CCTs) to identify possible opportunities to improve links between CCTs and reproductive health programs and to assess potential roles for operations research within these programs.
  • Provided recommendations to Peru's Ministry of Health on how to improve providers’ communication of family planning information to clients.
  • Tested the effect of an improved counseling model consisting of an algorithm (a series of sequenced decisions) assisted by job aids (e.g., cards and pamphlets on available methods) to improve the quality of family planning counseling in Ministry of Health clinics.
  • Developed a youth reproductive health radio program in Cusco, Peru, that was broadcast to 15 rural communities over a one-year period. The well-received "Adolesencia y Sexualidad," 20-minute daily programs, included music and youth news features, as well as information about reproductive health, sexuality, sexually transmitted infections including HIV, and self-esteem.
