Overview
The only Council project in Somalia, which focused on condom distribution, ended in early 2009. Since 1991, there has been no officially internationally recognized government in Somalia, owing to prolonged civil strife that has led to the erosion and destruction of most public infrastructures, widespread economic collapse, and reduced access to social services, including health care.
Highlights of past work
- Developed an effective condom programming strategy that can be used by UNFPA and its partners to guide efforts to raise awareness about condom use for both birth spacing and infection prevention, and to feasibly and effectively distribute condoms in a culturally sensitive and acceptable way to populations who want to use them.
