Gita Ramjee, Medical Research Council (South Africa)

Gita Ramjee is chief specialist scientist and director of the HIV Prevention Research Unit of the Medical Research Council (MRC) in Durban, South Africa.

 She also co-chairs the MRC’s Microbicide Development Program, and is head of the South African Microbicide Research Initiative. Ramjee joined the ICCR in 2003.

A leader in the microbicide field, she is a member of the International Working Group on Microbicides and sits on the Global Microbicide Initiative Steering Committee. She has a wealth of experience in running clinical trials of vaginal microbicides, and is one of the lead investigators in the phase 3 clinical trial of Carraguard®, the Population Council’s lead microbicide candidate.
