Programs > Frontiers in Reproductive Health > Capacity Building

A major FRONTIERS goal is to help developing-country researchers and institutions develop skills in conducting operations research (OR) and using research findings to develop reproductive health policies and programs. To that end, FRONTIERS works with researchers, donor agencies, and developing-country training, service, and research organizations to help institutionalize OR as a tool for program and policy development.

The capacity-building strategy works by:

  • Incorporating OR into the curriculums of developing-country training and research organizations;

  • Providing technical assistance to donors and service delivery agencies wishing to increase the use of OR; and

  • Supporting fellowships for developing-country nationals who want to learn OR skills; and

  • Developing courses to strengthen the OR skills of both managers and researchers

The Cairo Demographic Center, The International Institute of Population Studies (IIPS), Mumbai, the Center for Operations Research Training (CORT), Vadodara, India have added OR to their curricula with FRONTIERS Assistance, and the Reproductive Health Research Unit, University of Witwatersrand, South Africa, has incorporated OR into its summer training course. FRONTIERS has developed a short course in operations research for managers, a two-week OR proposal development workshop, a scientific writing course (available on the Council website), and a course in financial sustainability techniques. The courses have been offered in collaboration with both local and international organizations in Africa, Asia, Latin America, Europe, and the United States.
