The 4th Asia Pacific Conference on Reproductive and Sexual Health and Rights was held
29–31 October 2007 in Hyderabad, India (www.4apcrsh.org). The theme of the conference was
"Exploring New Frontiers in Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights." More
than 1,200 delegates attended the conference, which provided a platform for people with diverse perspectives, expertise, and experiences to exchange ideas, discuss and debate issues of concern, and learn from each other about sexual and reproductive health and rights, with specific reference to the implementation of the Programme of Action of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD 1994).

Saroj Pachauri, Population
Council South and East Asia regional director, was the chair of the
conference's scientific committee. The Council had a significant presence at the event; several colleagues presented their work and chaired or rapporteured sessions. A publications booth showcasing the Council’s cutting-edge work on reproductive health; poverty, gender, and youth; and HIV
and AIDS also was set up.
The Council's Frontiers in
Reproductive Health (FRONTIERS) program organized two special events at the conference. The first was a symposium entitled
"Addressing Unmet Reproductive Health Needs of Young Women in the Asia and
Near East Region." Council researchers shared study findings on how to help women achieve optimal birth-spacing intervals;
how to involve men in their wives’ antenatal and postpartum care; and how a community-based
"kangaroo mother care" program prevents neonatal and infant mortality.
The second was a satellite session entitled
"Translating Research
Into Action: Experience of Scaling Up Best Practices in South Asia." The session discussed successful scale-up models by FRONTIERS colleagues on
emergency contraception, systematic screening, and integrating an
adolescent training curriculum in youth training centers in national programs of
Bangladesh and India.
