FRONTIERS PROJECT
An Assessment of the Costs of Reproductive Health Services Offered at Four Faith-based Organizations

FRONTIERS helped to build the economic evaluation skills of the Christian Health Association of Ghana (CHAG) with a view to increasing the sustainability of reproductive health services provided by the private institutions that CHAG coordinates. CHAG and its member organizations, which include hospitals, health centers, and training centers, are a major source of health care services, especially in rural areas. This project worked with four CHAG-affiliated hospitals to enable them to determine the full costs of three services: family planning, antenatal care (ANC), and voluntary counseling and testing (VCT). The findings showed that the average cost for outpatient consultations ranged from US$5–$12, with VCT visits accounting for the highest costs, followed by ANC and family planning consultations. Information derived from this study will be used during negotiations for reimbursement in Ghana’s National Health Insurance Scheme. CHAG managers also plan to train other affiliated hospitals in economic evaluation techniques.
