FRONTIERS PROJECT
Introducing Postabortion Care (PAC) Services in Rural Senegal

With assistance from FRONTIERS, EngenderHealth assessed the effectiveness of introducing PAC services at health posts in two districts in rural Senegal. Following the intervention (formally titled "Taking Postabortion Care [PAC] Services Where They Are Needed: Testing PAC Expansion to Rural Areas"), clients were more than twice as likely to report receiving information on family planning, and 20 percent of PAC clients left the health post with a modern contraceptive method. Although the intervention resulted in higher standards of care, deficiencies still existed: Counseling is not systematically offered or sufficiently comprehensive, clients experienced delays prior to consultation and treatment, infection prevention practices were inconsistent, and financial and geographical barriers to access persist.
