FRONTIERS PROJECT
Assessing the Performance of Alternative Youth Center Models

Working with the Ministry of Health’s Reproductive Health Research Unit, FRONTIERS assessed the effectiveness of several South African youth centers as sources of reproductive health services. The study showed that the majority of adolescents in the vicinity of the youth centers are aware of the centers. Most clients are sexually experienced, suggesting that they are potential reproductive health service clients. Most visitors are female, out of school, and older than the target group of adolescents. There is considerable variation in the annual costs of the youth centers due to the type and cost of services provided and the number of visits by youth.
