FRONTIERS PROJECT
An Assessment of the Egyptian Norplant® Program

FRONTIERS worked with the Egypt Ministry of Health (MOH) and El Zanaty & Associates to assess the accuracy of management information on Norplant use. Researchers also investigated attitudes and knowledge about the implant among providers and users. About 17 percent of women had the implant removed before five years of use. Three-quarters of these women switched to another method. The most frequently reported side effects among discontinuers were severe bleeding, weight changes, and menstrual cycle disturbances. The majority of clients reported general satisfaction with Norplant.
