Introducing Depo-Provera Injectable Contraceptives (DMPA) to Private Medical Practitioners in Urban Gujarat
FRONTIERS worked with the Ministry of
Health and the Centre for
Operations Research and Training (CORT) to test a model for
introducing DMPA in
Gujarat. Two-thirds of physicians reported that their training on DMPA
was very useful and that they changed their clinical practices as a
result. Most physicians regularly counsel patients on DMPA and
techniques for managing common side effects. By the third month, only
27 percent of women were still using DMPA, but more than half of
discontinuers had switched to another method. Researchers also noted
that women were willing to pay for DMPA injections.
