FRONTIERS PROJECT
Integrating Adolescent Livelihood Activities Within a Reproductive Health Program for Urban Slum Dwellers

Working with the Ministry of Health, CARE, and the Centre for Operations Research and Training, FRONTIERS and the Population Council's Policy Research Division investigated the impact of vocational counseling, peer support groups, and savings programs upon the reproductive health of periurban adolescent girls. Girls' knowledge of reproductive health increased in the experimental site, nearly all girls participated in at least one skills training course, and over half opened savings accounts. However, numerous social barriers prevented the girls from turning their new skills into economic gain. Community sensitization is essential to increase social support for economic participation by girls and women.
