FRONTIERS PROJECT FRONTIERS worked with the Municipal Corporation Health Scheme, the Government of Gujarat, and the Population Research Centre to test the effectiveness of systematic screening to identify the reproductive health needs of women seeking care for themselves or their children in and around the city of Vadodara. Providers offered services for needs identified through a service algorithm, or made additional appointments or referrals to another facility if needs could not be addressed during the current visit. Following the intervention, the number of services per visit increased by 22 percent in the experimental urban clinics while decreasing slightly in the control clinics. The increase was smaller but still significant (9 percent) in health posts. The intervention is being scaled up throughout the city (see "Scaling Up the Systematic Screening Instrument (SSI) Project in India"), and the state of Gujarat plans to adopt the screening model.
