FRONTIERS PROJECT
Improving Health Care Providers’ Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practices in Reproductive Health in Rural Romania

In collaboration with the Ministry of Health, Project Concern International tested an intervention to improve reproductive health care in rural health clinics in Romania. The project trained rural physicians and nurses in reproductive health, and one group received follow-up support through an experienced physician who served as a resource person. Post-test results showed an increase in improvements in knowledge, attitudes, and practices from training in both groups, but the changes were not sustained. The resource persons were not very active due to a lack of understanding of the nature of the mentoring role and the tradition of competition between providers. These resource persons now coordinate groups in which rural providers meet and share knowledge and skills. Members also have the opportunity to link up with specialists in urban areas.
