FRONTIERS PROJECT
Testing Two Models of Postabortion Family Planning in Russia

In collaboration with the Ministry of Health and EngenderHealth, FRONTIERS investigated the relative effectiveness of two models of postabortion care (PAC) in reducing repeat abortions and increasing contraceptive use. Results showed that training providers in PAC services had a positive impact on client and provider knowledge of PAC family planning and led to a 20 percent increase in modern contraceptive use. The counseling and educational materials provided under the project translated into greater knowledge about fertility return and family planning use during the postabortion period. The repeat abortion rate declined dramatically in both the experimental and control groups.
