FRONTIERS PROJECT
Informing the Medical Community in Guatemala About Emergency Contraception

FRONTIERS worked with the Ministry of Health (MOH) and Social Assistance (MSPAS) and the Center for Research in the Epidemiology of Sexual and Reproductive Health (CIESAR) to increase awareness and knowledge about emergency contraception (EC) among the medical community in Guatemala. Five participants from a two-day emergency contraceptive training workshop held in Quito, Ecuador, established the Guatemalan Consortium on Emergency Contraception to coordinate EC informational and training activities in Guatemala. They selected and formed a group of ten trainers to replicate the EC workshop among interested organizations and professional groups. By April 2003 these trainers had conducted 21 workshops that trained over 550 participants from medical and nursing organizations, NGOs, hospitals, and members of the justice system. These workshops were successful in significantly increasing EC knowledge among participants.
