Women make up a disproportionate number of the world's poor. The Population Council examines and details the gender disparities that contribute to poverty and conducts research into the best ways of overcoming these inequities. One pathway to self-sufficiency involves micro-credit loans with which women can open small businesses. Women are responsible borrowers with a high on-time loan repayment rate. Additionally, women need assistance in acquiring skills to become economically productive, including economic literacy, access to savings, and formal-sector employment. The Council conducts interventions designed to determine the best ways of improving access to these crucial skills and opportunities.
