In many cultures, men are the major decisionmakers concerning health
issues in the household. All too often, however, their limited involvement
in activities related to the care of their wives and newborns means
that they are uninformed about many details concerning reproductive
issues and childbearing.
At
the same time, reproductive health programs and services have traditionally
served women and restricted men's participation. In cultures where men
are often the major resource brokers and decisionmakers reproductive
health activities may better serve women and men if men are more actively
involved.
The Population Council is undertaking studies to understand the consequences
and challenges of enhancing the role of men in different aspects of
reproductive health, such as management of sexually transmitted infections
(including HIV/AIDS), postpartum care, and health service delivery systems.
