Men and Male Roles

In many cultures, men are the major decisionmakers concerning health issues in the household. All too often, however, their limited involvement in activities related to the care of their wives and newborns means that they are uninformed about many details concerning reproductive issues and childbearing. 

Father and son in Bangladesh.At the same time, reproductive health programs and services have traditionally served women and restricted men's participation. In cultures where men are often the major resource brokers and decisionmakers reproductive health activities may better serve women and men if men are more actively involved.

The Population Council is undertaking studies to understand the consequences and challenges of enhancing the role of men in different aspects of reproductive health, such as management of sexually transmitted infections (including HIV/AIDS), postpartum care, and health service delivery systems.
