Study of Gender-based Violence in Algeria

In collaboration with the United Nations Development Fund for Women, the Population Council conducted a study of the roots of gender-based violence during the civil war in Algeria. The research also explored the role of Algerian women's organizations in confronting violence and dealing with its personal and community consequences.

This effort resulted in two books, From Uncivil War to Civil Peace: Algerian Women's Voices, and Living on a Fault Line: Political Violence Against Women in Algeria. These texts document the emergence of women's groups devoted to everything from fighting for women's equality to training women entrepreneurs, and from developing a mobile health clinic to setting up a legal and psychological aid hotline for women.
