HIV and AIDS The Population Council identifies sustainable and cost-effective responses to the HIV pandemic, especially for the hardest-hit regions of the world. Major biomedical initiatives include studying the role of the immune system in the spread of HIV and developing microbicides to prevent sexual transmission of infection. Social science and public health researchers identify best practices for providing cost-effective treatment, care, and support of persons affected by HIV and AIDS; addressing stigma and discrimination; preventing transmission; and reducing the consequences of the pandemic.
