Prevention is the key to reducing the future burden of HIV and AIDS on individuals and societies.

Evaluating existing HIV prevention strategies and developing new approaches to avoid the disease are essential components of the Population Council’s research and interventions.

This research seeks to reach individuals at multiple levels simultaneously to support abstinence when appropriate, reduce risk-taking, and increase health-promoting behavior.

Interventions targeting individuals, couples, peer groups, and communities work synergistically to support behavior change.

Prevention remains the largest area of HIV and AIDS research for the Population Council. The majority of work on this issue is implemented by Horizons, the Council-administered HIV operations research program and funded by the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). However, there are significant studies being conducted by Council researchers in Brazil, India, Indonesia, and Vietnam that are not US government-sponsored.
