Horizons Program—Acceptability of the Female Condom by Sex Workers in Brazil

Overview
This survey was designed for a Horizons study on female condom use in Brazil. The project was conducted in collaboration with the Brazil office of the Population Council. Female condoms were made available to various pharmacies in and around Campinas, to give sex workers working in the areas near the pharmacies access to low-priced female condoms. A promotional campaign directed toward sex workers also took place. This included theatrical presentations and workshops conducted by health promoters. The survey focuses on acceptability, negotiation, and usage of the female condom.

Methodology/validity
The instrument is available in Portuguese. The survey was based on those used in the Horizons female condom use study in Zimbabwe, with additional input from local Brazilian researchers and the study’s stakeholder group. This group included health officials and representatives from various nongovernmental organizations. The instrument was pre-tested in antenatal clinics.
