Horizons Program—Community-based Approaches to PMTCT in Kenya
Overview
These surveys were used to determine what effect various community approaches have on women's uptake of key PMTCT services. The study was designed and implemented by Horizons/Population Council, and International Medical Corps and Steadman Research Services International of Nairobi, Kenya. Included are the questionnaires administered pre-and post-implementation of intervention activities in low-income areas in Nairobi, Kenya.
Methodology/validity
These instruments were developed collaboratively among researchers within Population Council with active input from a researcher at Family Health International, and program implementers at International Medical Corps. Collaboration with Steadman Research International, a local Kenyan organization, included a review of the instrument to ensure that questions were culturally relevant and appropriate. Before the instrument was finalized, it was pre-tested with women attending antenatal and postnatal clinics. The average age of the women interviewed was 25 years. They were interviewed face-to-face in Kiswahili. The instrument is available in both English and Kiswahili.
