Horizons Program—Community Education and Referral: Supporting Adherence to ART and Prevention in Zambia

Overview
This survey was used in an operations research study to assess levels of adherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART) of adult HIV-positive persons receiving ART in public sector clinics in Zambia. Clinics were in urban settings in Ndola and Lusaka. Study partners include Horizons/Population Council, the International HIV/AIDS Alliance, and INESOR.

The survey addresses a number of topics, including:

  • ART treatment and adherence

  • HIV status disclosure

  • Perceived HIV-related stigma

  • Social support and social capital

  • Risk and prevention behaviors

  • Sociodemographics

Methodology/validity
Survey content was adapted from validated instruments from the Adult AIDS Clinical Trials Groups (AACTG). Cultural adaptation of the instrument was undertaken with inputs from researchers, psychologists, health care providers, and HIV-positive persons. The survey was pre-tested for clarity and length with 18 HIV-positive adults accessing care at ART clinics in Ndola and Lusaka.

Surveys were administered as face-to-face interviews conducted by local researchers, and are available in Bemba, Nyanza, and English.
