Horizons Program—Caring for Caregivers: Responding to the HIV/AIDS Needs of Hospital Workers in Zambia

Overview
This survey was used to evaluate the impact of a quasi-experimental study assessing a theory-based workplace HIV/AIDS program for hospital employees in urban Zambia. Horizons/Population Council, the University of Zambia Institute for Social Research (INESOR), Zambia Medical Association, and the Support for the HIV/AIDS Response in Zambia (SHARE) participated in this study.

Methodology/validity
The questionnaires were based on a conceptual model. Major sections address concerns about occupational exposure to HIV and awareness of post-exposure prophylaxis, attitudes toward condoms, knowledge about HIV, stigma, social capital, gender, work-related burnout, personal psychosocial burden from AIDS, sexual activity, and HIV-testing behavior.

The questionnaires drew from four theories: the AIDS risk-reduction model, the theory of social capital, the theory of gender and power, and Maslach’s burnout inventory. They were pre-tested three times before data collection, with a total sample of around 60 health workers. No validity or reliability tests were implemented. The survey is available here in English.

The respondents comprised medical doctors, clinical officers, nurses, paramedics, administrative staff, custodial workers, and student nurses working in five hospitals. A total of 1,424 people were interviewed at baseline (February 2004), and 1,461 at follow-up (March 2006). For the literate staff, a self-administered method was used; for the nonliterate custodial staff, face-to-face interviews were used.
