Macro International, Inc.—Demographic and Health Survey
Overview
The Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) were designed by Macro International for the MEASURE DHS program to improve the information base for reproductive health and health program management through sample surveys. The “core” instrument is used as the base instrument for the many country-specific DHS surveys used worldwide, and is usually applied to a representative sample of women (of reproductive age) in a particular country. DHS data and published survey reports are easily accessible via the Internet. The current version of the “core” instrument includes a range of HIV-related questions. In addition to the core instrument, there are a number of other modules that address topics that may be relevant for HIV-related research. The survey library links to “core” instrument, as well as the main page of the DHS, so that other modules can be accessed. Other modules that may be particularly relevant include the Domestic Violence module and Women’s Status modules, and modules that are designed to be administered to men.
Methodology/validity
HIV-related questions in the “core” survey address a number of topics, including:
Sexual behavior and condom use
AIDS-related knowledge
Communication, stigma, and discrimination related to HIV/AIDS
Experience with and attitudes toward HIV-testing
Recognition of other STIs, STI self-reports, and response to STI illness
The Domestic Violence module asks questions regarding the severity, frequency, and types of violence (e.g., physical, psychological, and/or sexual violence) that women have experienced. The Women’s Status module explores issues such as partner choice, household bargaining power, familial relations, mobility, and gender norms.
The questions selected for the surveys represent the input of expert opinion worldwide, and the surveys are reviewed regularly. The questions are adapted, changed, modified, or supplemented depending on the country or area where the survey will be administered.
