MEASURE Evaluation and Zambian Ministry of Health—Zambia Sexual Behavior Survey
Overview
The MEASURE Evaluation program is implemented by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partnership with Tulane University, Macro International, John Snow Research and Training Institute, and the Future's Group International. This survey, the first of its kind in Zambia, was developed with the objectives of obtaining national estimates of key indicators related to HIV/STI prevention and AIDS care for the national program. The questionnaire was designed to provide information on:
Background characteristics
Knowledge of HIV/AIDS
Condom knowledge, use, and access
Marriage and cohabitation
Sexual behavior and attitudes toward gender, sex, STIs, and AIDS
The survey was administered to a nationally representative sample survey with separate estimates for rural and urban areas. Two types of questionnaires were administered, a household and an individual.
Methodology/validity
A weeklong pilot test of the questionnaire was carried out in urban and rural communities near Lusaka. The Zambia Sexual Behavior Survey was conducted in 1998, 2000, 2003, and 2005.
