Center for AIDS Prevention Studies, UCSF—Healthy Oakland Teens Survey 

Overview
The Healthy Oakland Teens Project (HOT) began in the fall of 1992 at an urban, ethnically diverse junior high school. The project's goal is to reduce adolescents’ risk of infection by using peer role models to advocate for responsible decisionmaking, healthy values and norms, and improved communication skills. The survey from this study contains sections on the following:

• Sexual behaviors;

• Demographic AIDS-related knowledge;

• Negative and positive aspects of condom use;

• Perceived prevalence of risk behaviors among the friends of adolescents;

• Attitudes regarding sexually active students;

• Partner norms;

• Self-efficacy; and

• Alcohol consumption

There are many questions about sexual attitudes and practices, as well as many condom/safer sex questions.

Methodology/validity
The survey instrument was developed from earlier surveys that addressed similar issues and was pilot tested on junior high school students in California. Content and wording in this survey were modified based on pilot study results and participant feedback. The survey includes scales of acculturation and depression.
