Population Council and Nation Media Group—Radio Program Evaluation Tools
Overview
These research tools were developed by the Population Council and the Nation Media Group to evaluate a media project in Nairobi, Kenya. The project, whose main objective is to disseminate accurate reproductive health information to the public, is the weekly “Your Shout” radio show aired on a popular FM station. The live call-in show aims to stimulate debate about traditionally taboo subjects by encouraging callers to share their experiences and ask questions about sexual health. Topics covered have included infertility, breastfeeding, HIV/AIDS, sexually transmitted diseases, female genital mutilation, and youth. The evaluation employed both quantitative and qualitative data collection techniques; an interview schedule (questionnaire) and focus group discussions, respectively. For the interviews, the respondents were randomly selected using systematic random sampling.
The evaluation objectives were to:
Establish the profile of the program’s audience (e.g., age, sex, education level, employment status, etc.).
Establish the people’s awareness of the program (Do people know about "Your Shout"? Do they know about the Wednesday program? How did they know about the program? How many times have they tuned in?).
Assess the listeners’ awareness and interest on the reproductive health issues discussed.
Find out how useful the information disseminated has been to the listeners.
Determine the listeners’ preferences (host, content, language, airing time, duration, day, experts, what they would retain or cut out).
Solicit the listeners’ suggestions for improving the program.
