Horizons Program—Female Condom Users in Zimbabwe

Overview
The goal of this study was to explore the patterns and dynamics of female condom use, so that policymakers and program planners involved in this subject would be well informed. This study took place a year after the launch in July 1997 of Population Services International (PSI) and the Zimbabwe National AIDS Coordination Programmes’ (NACP) social marketing program for the female condom in Zimbabwe. One team of 24 interviewers operated out of Harare, a team of 10 interviewers was based in Bulawayo, 6 interviewers were in Gweru and 6 more in Mutare. This descriptive, cross-sectional study included female and male condom users, and non-users of both barrier methods.

Methodology/validity
A local Zimbabwean research organization, Target Research, Ltd., pre-tested the survey to determine time needed to administer the various instruments and the ease of use of the questionnaires. The results of the pretest were reviewed by PSI, Target Research, and Horizons staff and small adjustments were made. Supervisory support was provided in each of the sites, and a team of back-checkers were employed to visit, on a random basis, the outlets at which interviewers were posted, to check whether they were there and whether they were intercepting and interviewing people as instructed.
