Horizons Program—Enhancing Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy (HAART) in Thailand

Overview
Antiretroviral (ARV) surveys, developed by the Research Institute for Health Sciences, Chiang Mai University and Horizons, were designed to evaluate the use of practical guidelines and a clinic-counseling intervention with and without a peer-based component to reduce dropouts and to promote short and long-term HIV adherence. The surveys addressed a number of topics, including:

  • Antiretroviral therapy knowledge and perceptions

  • Adherence and side effects

  • HIV/AIDS symptoms

  • Risk behaviors

Methodology/validity
The ARV surveys are being used in a three-arm study in 45 hospitals in Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Lampang, and Lampoon provinces in northern Thailand. The survey is available in Thai and English. The surveys were piloted among 200 people living with HIV/AIDS in northern Thailand who are currently receiving highly active antiretroviral therapy.
