Center for AIDS Prevention Studies, UCSF—Project Access Qualitative Guide

Overview
Project Access was commissioned by the California State Office of AIDS and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention order to examine counseling and testing (C&T) utilization and prevention programs through the perspective of drug users. The needs assessment was conducted in three Bay Area counties in California: Alameda, Contra Costa, and San Mateo. The goals of the project were to:

  1. Investigate the HIV C&T utilization and prevention strategies of heterosexual drug users in three counties in northern California.

  2. Enhance access to and delivery of HIV prevention and intervention services to heterosexual drug users.

Methodology/validity
Since 1997, 187 qualitative interviews have been conducted with injecting drug users, and crack cocaine and other illicit drug users. The Project Access Team also conducted a neighborhood ethnography of drug users in West Oakland, California. This information focused on assessing the unique cultural and material factors which contribute to higher rates of HIV infection among African-American drug users.
