UNAIDS—Looking Deeper Into the HIV Epidemic:
A Questionnaire for Tracing Sexual Networks

Overview
The Tracing Sexual Networks questionnaire explores in detail each sexual relationship the respondent participates in. Responses can be used to determine different patterns of sexual mixing, which have widely different implications for the spread of the HIV epidemic. The survey builds heavily upon the Prevention Indicator Survey, and is divided into eight sections:

  1. Identification

  2. Background characteristics

  3. Marriage and regular partnerships

  4. Nonregular and commercial sex

  5. Condoms

  6. Sexually transmitted diseases and health issues

  7. Knowledge of AIDS

  8. Risk perception, behavior change, and attitudes toward persons with HIV/AIDS

Methodology/validity
The sequence of questions has been designed to progress from consideration of marriage, to other regular sexual relationships, to relationships with sex workers. The design of the questionnaire has proved to be successful in identifying who was at increased risk of HIV, with what type of behavior, and where. This questionnaire based many of its items on the UNAIDS/WHO/USAID/MEASURE Evaluation Global HIV AIDS Prevention Indicator Survey, which has been widely tested across many countries.
