In Vietnam, stigma and discrimination toward people living with HIV and AIDS (PLHA) is recognized as a key barrier to successful HIV/AIDS programs, as evidence suggests that PLHA frequently suffer ill treatment in the community in general, and in health care settings in particular. The Institute for Social Development Studies (ISDS), the Horizons program/Population Council, and the International Center for Research on Women (ICRW) recently have completed operations research to test the impact of interventions to reduce hospital-based stigma and discrimination toward people living with HIV and AIDS, and improve quality of care in Vietnam.

Khuat Thi Hai Oanh, M.D., of ISDS, principal researcher of the study, presented key findings from the study and lessons learned about how best to reduce stigma and improve quality of care in the health care setting.
