The Kenya PMCT Project, in partnership with Horizons/Population Council, UNICEF, and the Regional AIDS Training Network and with financial support from USAID, has developed a training manual for health providers on the prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV. The course, which was developed by many different experts, including an obstetrician, pediatricians, lactation management specialists, counselors, and an adult educator, was first piloted-tested and then revised based on extensive feedback. The course is an integrated approach to PMCT in the mother and child health care setting.
The curriculum consists of five training modules; conducting it requires 10 working days. (Available in PDF only on the Web or on CD by request. Please send CD requests to the address listed below.) The area of PMCT is changing very fast, and this curriculum will certainly change in structure, content, and duration. The intent is that this first edition, published in 2002, will be revised periodically. The publishers therefore request that users and readers send their comments, which may be used in the periodic revisions of the course, to naresa@alphanet.co.ke.
