HORIZONS PROJECT
Diagnostic Study on the Involvement of People Living with HIV/AIDS in the Delivery of Community-based Prevention and Care Services

In Burkina Faso, Ecuador, Zambia, and Maharashtra State, India, researchers collected qualitative and quantitative data via individual and group interviews, focus group discussions, observations, service statistics, and a questionnaire.

Key findings included:

  • There are four distinct types of people living with HIV/AIDS (PLHA) involvement, identified as: access to services, inclusion, participation, and greater involvement.

  • Involvement in nongovernmental organization (NGO) activities can have therapeutic effects for PLHA.

  • PLHA involvement strengthens NGOs.

  • The socioeconomic context strongly influences PLHA involvement.

  • PLHA involvement should not be equated with public disclosure and visibility.

  • Greater PLHA involvement requires creating a supportive NGO environment.

The study concluded that NGOs can overcome many of the factors that limit involvement by implementing the following recommendations:

  • Promote positive and nondiscriminatory attitudes and policies toward PLHA.

  • Build the capacity of PLHA for involvement.

  • Offer psychological support, including peer support, to PLHA.

  • Provide material support to PLHA with few resources.

  • Network with other organizations and services to foster PLHA involvement.
