HORIZONS PROJECT
Adding Emerging STI/HIV Issues to Family Planning and Antenatal Care: Situation Analysis in KwaZulu-Natal

Using a situation analysis approach, this Horizons study aimed to obtain information from a representative sample of provincial health care facilities in KwaZulu-Natal, offering reproductive health services to identify gaps in service delivery and to determine priorities for integration to meet the growing demand for HIV/AIDS-related services. Specifically, the study examined the:

  • Availability and quality of voluntary counseling and testing services.
  • Extent of integration of family planning, antenatal care, and sexually transmitted infection services with HIV prevention.
  • Extent of condom promotion and other HIV prevention strategies.

Numerous key findings were found in each of these areas, including:

  • Family planning: Most of the province’s family planning facilities have adequate infrastructure, availability of contraceptives, equipment, logistics, and other necessities to provide services.
  • Antenatal care: Antenatal care clients are more likely to receive traditional medical exams than tests for syphilis and HIV.
  • Voluntary counseling and testing: Client load for voluntary counseling and testing, a relatively new service, is much less than for other reproductive health services.

The results of the study were presented at a dissemination seminar in July 2003 for discussion and to prioritize recommendations. Individuals in attendance decided on the highest-priority recommendations, which are outlined in the report.
