Algeria, located between Morocco and Tunisia in northern Africa, has a population of 32.1 million, with approximately 30 percent of its citizens younger than 15 years old. The median age of men and women is 24 years. The country’s estimated population growth rate is 1.28 percent, and its birth and death rates are 17.76 and 4.61 per 1,000 population, respectively.

The Population Council has conducted research on gender-based violence in Algeria, and researchers from Algeria have participated in study groups organized by the Council's Middle East Research Awards Program.
