MIDDLE EAST The Reproductive Health Working Group (RHWG) The Reproductive Health Working Group (RHWG) was established in 1988 by the Population Council as a multidisciplinary group of social and medical researchers interested in reproductive health research of quality and relevance to the region. Members of the RHWG, who are based in five Arab countries and Turkey, include professionals with specialization in anthropology, biostatistics, demography, medicine, public health, and sociology. The coordination of the RHWG is housed in the Council's Cairo office, which manages work in West Asia and North Africa. The objective of the group's research is to understand conditions related to women's health from social science and medical perspectives. Three issues are central to women's reproductive health: women's physical health in terms of morbidity conditions related to reproduction; women's perceptions of their health and their dignity in relation to reproduction; and the quality of reproductive health services directed to women. The RHWG publishes policy series and monographs in reproductive health. One of the projects of the RHWG was an investigation of the reproductive health of women living in rural Giza. A report of this 10-year study was published in 1999. RHWG country teams in Jordan,
Lebanon, and Sudan are conducting studies based on research conducted in Giza, Egypt,
which found a surprisingly high rate of gynecological and related illnesses among the
sample population of women. |
