The Middle East Research Awards Program was established in 1978 to enhance research capacities in the field of population in the Middle East region. An interdisciplinary program, it has sponsored individual researchers and promoted partnerships with research and teaching institutions in the Arab world, Iran, and Turkey.

Since its inception MEAwards has fostered interdisciplinary work and given regional scholars the opportunity to work on emerging issues. In addition to studies of demographic dynamics, MEAwards projects have addressed community health, child labor, population displacement, gender, policy reform, and poverty. The MEAwards program has also been particularly concerned with exploring relevant research methodologies and disseminating findings to the larger public and policy communities.

The program has carried out numerous activities, including a research awards competition every two years; working groups; study groups and workshops; regional exchange between institutions; technical consultation to researchers and institutions and publication of regional papers and dissemination of research findings in regional and international publications. Its core programs have been research awards and working groups.
